Liposuction techniques: tumescent, ultrasound, and laser-assisted
How fat is loosened and removed has evolved beyond basic suction.

Liposuction is no longer a single technique, and understanding the main approaches helps patients have an informed conversation with their surgeon.
The foundation of modern liposuction is the tumescent technique, in which a large volume of fluid containing local anesthetic and a vessel-constricting agent is infused into the fat before removal. This numbs the area, reduces bleeding and bruising, and makes the fat easier to suction, improving both safety and comfort. Building on this, energy-assisted methods use ultrasound, laser, or radiofrequency energy to liquefy or loosen the fat before removal, which can make extraction smoother in fibrous areas and, in some systems, add a degree of skin tightening, a meaningful benefit given that loose skin is a common concern after fat removal. Power-assisted devices use a vibrating cannula to ease removal and reduce surgeon fatigue.
No single technique is universally best; the right choice depends on the area, the patient's tissue, and the goals, and an experienced surgeon selects among them. The energy-assisted options that add skin tightening can be valuable for patients with mild laxity, while straightforward tumescent liposuction handles many cases beautifully. The technology matters less than the surgeon's skill and judgment, a point worth remembering when a clinic markets a branded device. The right question is not which machine they own, but why they recommend a given approach for your body.
